POSITION SUMMARY
The Maintenance Technician I performs a variety of basic maintenance, building services,janitorial, and engineering duties for the Facility Services Department.  The employee reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and may also be assigned, at times, to receive guidance and instruction from another Technician.
 
The Maintenance Technician I performs a variety of unskilled janitorial work and unskilled work in various crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, painting, electrical, sheet metal, masonry, and machinist work.  The employee is guided by a general understanding of building trades, janitorial services, carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical repairs, plant maintenance methods, techniques, procedures, and operation and use of department equipment and supplies.  The Maintenance Technician I will work individually or with others, as directed.  The Maintenance Technician I performs duties in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs a variety of duties in maintaining, repairing, and renovating plant and facilities.  Typical tasks performed may include:  repair/replace ceiling tile, repair faucets, replace filters, move equipment, change out TV’s, assemble furniture and equipment, install signs, maintain paint shop stock, paint, repair/replace window glass/screens, repair drywall or other surfaces, perform preventative maintenance, maintain grounds/entrances/landscapes.  Operates motor vehicles in performance of duties.
  • Makes normal and minor repairs as directed by the supervisor and reports major problems to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Constructs, finishes, installs, maintains, and repairs equipment, systems, and facilities related to any craft or combination of same, using power and hand tools and other necessary equipment.
  • Performs janitorial tasks as required.
  • Cleans, lubricates, services, repairs, installs, and diagnoses malfunctioning equipment.
  • Maintains shops, mechanical spaces, public and student areas, etc., in a clean, safe manner. 
  • Responds to emergency problems and makes emergency repairs as needed.
  • Maintains logs, performs rounds, completes P.M. work orders, tests, and inspections.
  • Serves as a member of Facility Services’ Emergency Response team and is considered an essential employee during emergencies.
  • Maintains the University’s grounds and assists in removing snow.
  • Responsible for event set-ups for University and Sligo Church events. 
  • Performs related and other departmental duties as required. 
  • Supports a spirit of excellence in service.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience:
  • High school diploma .
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Must possess an extremely high sense of urgency, personal energy, and stamina.
  • Must be capable of handling multiple priorities and extensive time demands.

Language Skills:
  • Command of English grammar and spelling. 
  • Verbal and written communication in English.
Mathematical and Technology Skills:
  • Basic mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to use work order system and email.
Reasoning Ability: 
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, and/or supervisor.
  • Ability to understand and carry out general instructions in standard situations.
 Physical Demands: 
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Good physical condition including the ability to walk, sit, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb stairs, ladders (of up to 25 ft.) and/or equipment, and a good sense of balance to work on heights of up to 25 ft. is required.  Some lifting of medium and heavy materials, equipment and tools of up to 50 lbs. is required.  Employee  must be able to work in hazardous surroundings.
